Felon found guilty of Orland Park kidnapping, burglary

A felon who has been charged in multiple cases for targeting and robbing Vietnamese business owners in Chicago, nearby suburbs and Wisconsin has been found guilty of kidnapping an 11-year-old while committing residential burglary at a home in Orland Park in 2008, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney office.
Tuyen Ngo, 35 was found guilty of aggravated kidnapping and residential burglary after a jury trial at the Bridgeview courthouse.
Ngo has been charged with similar crimes in Burbank, Chicago, Skokie and Waukesha, Wis., a release from the state’s attorney’s office said.
According to investigators, Ngo targeted Vietnamese business owners who operate nail salons and other family-owned stores to rob them. Cases in Chicago, Skokie and Wisconsin still are pending.
According ti prosecutors, in the Orland Park case, on April 19, 2008, the 11-year-old victim was home alone in the 16200 block of Kingsport in Orland Park. The defendant rang the doorbell but the victim did not answer. The defendant then broke a window in the basement and gained entry into the home. Once inside, Ngo confronted the victim and asked if anyone else was home. The victim told him no and the defendant then pushed the victim into the bathroom, securing the door with a computer cord.
According to prosecutors, Ngo then took two computers, jewelry, cash and a safe and loaded the items in his van, which was parked in the driveway. The defendant then re-entered the home and removed the cord from the bathroom door and fled.
An image of Ngo’s van was captured on video by a neighbor’s security camera. The 11-year-old victim later identified the defendant in both a photo array and physical lineup. The victim also testified at the trial last week.
Ngo was initially arrested on Aug. 12, 2008, after allegedly committing the home invasions in Burbank and Orland Park while out on bond for the Wisconsin case. A subsequent police investigation led to Ngo being charged for a similar home invasion in Chicago on April 28, 2008. All of the victims in the cases are Vietnamese.
On Feb. 10, 2011, Ngo was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison for the home invasion in Burbank. In that case, on May 19, 2008, Ngo broke into the house armed with a handgun and locked the victim in the bathroom. Ngo fired the gun twice into the floor before fleeing with the victim’s jewelry and money.
Ngo is scheduled to be sentenced in the Orland Park case on Aug. 15.
