11-year-old boy hit on I-57

An 11-year-old boy suffered major head injuries and was in a coma after being hit by a car Sunday afternoon on Interstate 57 in the far South Side Washington Heights community, according to Illinois State Police.
A northbound car struck the boy near 103rd Street when he stepped into a lane as he walked along the expressway with some friends about 2:23 p.m., Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Robert Satkiewicz said.
The driver of the car tried avoiding the boy, Satkiewicz said, and she remained at the scene after the accident.
Paramedics took the boy to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in critical condition, fire officials said.
