Police warn of burglaries in Will County

Updated: September 7, 2012 6:12AM

Manhattan police have alerted residents to a series of daytime residential burglaries.

Incidents have occurred from Pauling Road to the Sunset Lakes and Hanover subdivisions and Carriage Lane in unincorporated Will County, where a 2003 Cadillac was stolen from a garage June 28.

Police said one or more persons approach homes during the daytime and knock on doors. If the resident answers, they pretend to be looking for directions or a lost pet, or ask to use the phone, claiming to have car trouble, according to a police department news release. If no one answers, they attempt to gain entry to the home, police said.

Police urge residents to call 911 to report anyone who appears to be “out of place” in the neighborhood — walking, driving slowly and observing, or if they are approached by anyone asking questions or for directions.

Residents should also attempt to get a description of the person or vehicle, not allow unknown persons into their homes, and be sure to lock their homes and vehicles, police said.

Those with questions should call (815) 474-4408.
