A 100-year-old home was heavily damaged, but no injuries were reported after a fire broke out early Thursday in New Lenox Township.
The homeowner was at work at 2:54 a.m. when firefighters were called to the two-story home in the 1400 block of North Cedar Road, New Lenox Fire Protection District spokeswoman Erika Leader said.
North Cedar Road was temporarily closed from Francis Road to Route 6 to allow firefighters access to a fire hydrant across the street.
Firefighters, assisted by surrounding departments, were able to extinguish the blaze in two hours, Fire Chief Jon Mead said. They believe the fire may have started on the first floor near the kitchen and dining room, he said.
New Lenox fire officials remained on the scene for 12 hours investigating the cause of the fire. Asked whether the fire was suspicious, Mead said, “We don’t know. We’re looking at everything.”
