Alsip police advise residents of car burglaries

Alsip police are increasing patrols in the Hazelgreen area after several cars were burglarized overnight Tuesday, and the are urging residents to lock their cars, even if they will be away for only a few minutes.
Police are asking residents to call and report suspicious people or activities, a community alert said.
Most of the incidents involved cars that were left unlocked, some parked in front of homes or in driveways. Burglars can enter an unlocked car and use the garage door opener to get inside a house, the alert said.
On a related note, police urge residents to make sure garage entry doors are locked and garage doors closed completely when they leave.
Residents are advised to lock cars, roll up windows and take anything of value out of the car, especially expensive items that are easy to conceal such as electronics or wallets/purses. This includes “clues” that electronics might be hidden inside, such as chargers and docking stations.
And if running into a gas station or store for a few minutes, auto owners should take the keys out of the car. While it’s tempting to leave the heat running, it makes the car an easy target, the alert said.
