Woman arrested after Olympia Fields standoff

Updated: January 5, 2013 6:15AM

A 55-year-old homeless woman was arrested after threatening a family member at gunpoint Friday night in a home in the 3200 block of London Drive in Olympia Fields, police said.

Charges are pending a psychological evaluation, police detective Mark Akiyama said.

Police received a call about 11 a.m. from a family member who said the woman, a relative who was staying at the home, confronted her at gunpoint with a complaint about excessive noise, Cook County sheriff’s police spokesman Frank Bilecki said.

The resident said the woman had a history of mental illness and violent behavior, Bilecki said. Olympia Fields police contacted the sheriff’s hostage, barricade and terrorist team, which responded to the home.

Negotiators spoke to the woman until about 2 a.m. Saturday, Bilecki said. He said when negotiations failed, police sent a robot with a video camera into the basement. When it was determined the basement was clear, a tactical team entered the home.

The woman was found sleeping in a second-floor bedroom, Bilecki said. The woman was startled by the police, who subdued her with a stun gun, he said.

Bilecki said the gun was located near the woman, who was taken into custody about 3:30 a.m.
