Orland School District 135’s long search for a new superintendent has ended with the hiring of Janet Stutz, an assistant superintendent for learning in the Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills elementary school district, officials said Thursday.
Stutz will leave Community Consolidated School District 181 on June 30 to take over in District 135, according to a news release from District 181.
Stutz has been with District 181 since 2008, and earned high praise from Supt. Renee Schuster.
“She has done so much to advance the learning of District 181 students and the professional development of our staff, while providing support and communication to families and the community,” Schuster said.
Stutz will replace Carol Kunst, who in June was hired as interim superintendent.
Kunst, who hoped to get the permanent position, got the temporary job after an initial search by District 135 produced five finalists who failed to wow school board members, forcing the district to begin its search anew.
The district serves about 5,400 students at seven elementary schools and three junior highs.
Change has been a constant in the superintendent’s office.
Paul Howell, who had been the district’s curriculum director, took over as superintendent in July 2010 after the retirement of Dennis Soustek. In January, Howell moved back to his curriculum post, and Soustek came out of retirement to temporarily handle the job until Kunst was hired.
