Hammond, Chicago Heights, come to agreement on water costs

Residents of Chicago Heights and other nearby communities won’t lose water service after the city and Hammond, Ind., announced an agreement Tuesday to stop a legal battle over the cost of water.
Chicago Heights sued Hammond last year in U.S. District Court in Hammond when Hammond wanted to more than quadruple the amount Chicago Heights was paying it for water, which Chicago Heights used for its citizens and sold to other communities.
Hammond threatened to cut off water to Chicago Heights if it didn’t agree to the new price.
The two sides filed a briefing Tuesday saying they had reached a deal in principle and were working out the details. They expect to dismiss the lawsuit.
