A 28-year-old man from downstate Edwardsville was charged with aggravated DUI after a Chicago woman fell out of the SUV he was driving on the Bishop Ford Freeway early Tuesday and was fatally struck by a semi truck and car near Dolton, police said.
Jennifer Mitchell, 27, was hit by at least two vehicles just before 1 a.m. Tuesday near 154th Street, authorities said. She died at the scene.
Michael D. Johnson was charged with aggravated DUI involving death, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, Illinois State Police said Thursday.
Mitchell fell from the passenger side of her SUV in the southbound lanes of Interstate 94. State police said “it remains unclear if Mitchell was pushed or jumped.”
Johnson was driving and did not stop when Mitchell fell out, but he crashed at the exit ramp near 127th Street, police said. He attempted to flee but was caught by state troopers, police said.
Johnson was treated for minor injuries at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
Johnson, who is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday in Markham, has a long criminal history, including two convictions for domestic battery, and at least seven other arrests, including four for assault, police said.
