Lockport police are investigating the death of a 48-year-old woman who was hit by a car early Sunday after she wandered away from a group home for developmentally disabled adults.
The woman was identified as Tina Douglas, the Will County Coroner’s office said. Preliminary indications after an autopsy Sunday were that she died from injuries received in the accident on State Street at 18th Street, the coroner’s office said.
She had wandered away from a group home near Daggett and State streets about 4:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from Lockport police. The home, two blocks from the accident scene, is operated by Trinity Services, the release said. Trinity could not be reached Sunday for comment.
A supervisor for the group home had called police to alert them that a client had walked away, the release said.
Douglas was struck by a northbound car driven by an 18-year-old man from Olympia Fields, the release said. He is cooperating with the investigation.
A witness told police that Douglas was walking in the middle of State Street when she was struck by the vehicle.
Alcohol is not a factor in the accident, the release said.
Douglas was pronounced dead at 5:22 a.m. Sunday in the emergency room of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, the coroner’s office said.
