The state elections board on Tuesday threw out a complaint filed by an unsuccessful challenger to Cook County Commissioner Elizabeth Gorman that alleged she violated campaign finance laws.
Mark Thompson, who lost to Gorman (R-Orland Park) in the February 2010 Republican primary, accused the commissioner of falsely reporting the source of loans to her 2002 campaign.
In the complaint filed about a month before the primary election, he also accused her of reporting a “false recipient” for an expenditure of $100,080 by her campaign committee, The Gorman Good Government Group.
In her 2002 campaign, Gorman’s campaign committee had listed $390,000 in loans to her campaign as coming from her husband’s new-car dealership, Dodge of Midlothian, and another business he owned, Sales Inc. She later changed the name of the creditor to her husband.
A repayment of $100,080 was reported to Sales Inc., but that was later changed to being repaid to Gerald Gorman.
In its ruling, the election board says there’s nothing to show that the loans came from someone other than Gerald Gorman and that Liz Gorman’s committee “did not act improperly in amending its campaign financing reports.”
