Midlothian homeowners soon will have an extra $5 to $20 to spend thanks to a village property tax refund.
In order to get the refund, property owners must fill out a refund application.
The rebate is for 2010 real estate taxes paid in 2011.
Mayor Terry Stephens said in 2010 the village levied approximately $47,000 more than should have been levied due to the time lag between when the village is legally required to approve its levy and when the county assessor determines property value.
The levy, which is supposed to be based on the equalized assessed value of property in the village, must be decided each December, Stephens said.
However, the exact valuation is not determined by the Cook County assessor until at least nine months later.
Refund applications are available at village hall or on the village’s website, www.villageofmidlothian.net.
In addition to the application, homeowners must provide a copy of the second installment of their 2010 property tax bill as well as proof of payment of both the first and second installments of their property tax.
This could be a copy of the Cook County treasurer’s online statement showing paid taxes, which can be obtained at www.cookcoiuntytreasurer.com.
Completed applications with required documentation must be submitted to the village by 5 p.m. March 2. Refund checks then will be processed and mailed within 30 days.
