Walkers hold ‘fire sale’ to aid breast cancer fight

Jessica Lynn Maples, an Oak Forest firefighter, has many reasons to take part in next month’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

For one, her aunt is in remission after battling cancer, and other women she’ll walk with have been personally touched by cancer as well.

The six women — they call themselves Girls Gone Walking (for a cure) — didn’t want to limit their fundraising activities to the walk alone, and this weekend are holding a garage sale at Oak Forest’s Fire Station 1, 5620 James Drive. All proceeds will go toward the walk. The sale is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Maples said it’s her third year participating in the walk, but some of the women in her group have done it for five years, including one who lost her mother to breast cancer. Maples said she has been a firefighter in Oak Forest for nine years.

“We all have people in our lives that this affects,” Maples said. “We know someone that is in our family or that we work with or a friend. We walk for all these people.”
