Mary Senne is an early riser, and a big fan of Berkot’s Super Foods.

That might help explain why she and her husband, Bob, plunked down a couple of chairs at 4:30 in the morning Thursday to be among the first in line for the opening of Berkot’s store in Orland Park. The first 100 people through the doors received a free bag of groceries, and that giveaway will be repeated, starting at 8 a.m., through Sunday.

The lucky 13th store for the chain, it’s located in Wolf Crossing, southwest of 159th Street and Wolf Road. At 40,000 square feet, it is the company’s biggest store to date.

“I heard this (Berkot’s) was really a big one,” Mary Senne said.

The couple, who’ve lived in Burbank for nearly 52 years, used to patronize the Berkot’s in Hickory Hills, and will shop on occasion at the Mokena store, Mary said.

But there was something more than merely being among the first to step foot inside a new supermarket, right?

“I have gone to different things like this before,” Mary said, explaining that she frequents those pre-dawn “Black Friday” deals after Thanksgiving. “You meet the nicest people in line.”

Senne said she and her husband rose at 3 a.m. and, with coffee in hand, were not only at the front of the line, they were the line. Although she’d brought a chair, “the weather was beautiful at that time, and I just walked around.”
