Layoffs to hit Comcast’s Tinley center

Updated: September 8, 2012 6:13AM

Cable company Comcast will lay off 106 workers at its Tinley Park call center this fall, according to a filing with the state.

The layoffs will begin Oct. 1 and be completed by Oct. 15, according to a monthly listing of layoff notices from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

The office, 8101 W. 183rd St., handles customer issues, dispatches service technicians, and also houses some security and information technology personnel. It has about 425 employees, Jack Segal, a Comcast spokesman, said.

Comcast also notified the state it will cut 78 jobs at its Oak Brook office, also in October.

Segal said the company is creating “functional centers of excellence,” with offices focused on one specific task rather than multiple functions. The Tinley Park office will concentrate on billing issues only, Segal said.

While 106 workers are being laid off, Comcast will try to find other jobs for them, either in the Chicago area or elsewhere, he said. Also, Comcast expects to hire a like number of people for the Tinley location before the end of the year, Segal said.
