The Economic Development Council for the Southwest Suburbs, an organization affiliated with Moraine Valley Community College’s Corporate, Community and Continuing Education area, has selected the 2012 Stars of the Southwest Suburbs award winners.

The Stars of the Southwest Suburbs Awards recognize the contributions businesses and their advocates make to the economic development of Chicago’s southwest suburbs. Awards are presented in seven categories: training and development; sustainability, excellence in government; philanthropy; and three divisions of best places to work, based on number of employees.

Smith Village Senior Living Community in Chicago will receive the Training and Development Award. FutureMark Paper, an Alsip-based manufacturer of recycled coated paper for magazines, will receive the Sustainability Award.

Excellence in Government awards will be presented to Alsip Mayor Patrick Kitching, and Vicky Smith, executive director of the Southwest Conference of Mayors. The Philanthropy Award will be presented to Patrick McShane, president of the Disabled Patriot Fund in Orland Park.

Winners of the Best Places to Work Award include Schroeder Materials in Worth, St. Coletta’s of Illinois in Tinley Park, and Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park.

The awards will be presented at the 2012 Business Champion Awards dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Moraine Business and Conference Center, Building M, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. Tickets are $50.
