Holiday gift spending to rise

Auditing and consulting firm Deloitte said Monday that its survey of Chicago-area consumers shows that they’ll increase spending on holiday gifts by 10 percent this year, to an average of $450. Also, 44 percent plan to shop online this year, and 65 percent of smartphone owners plan to use their devices for holiday shopping.
Deloitte is forecasting total holiday spending in the U.S. to increase 3.5 percent to 4 percent compared with a year ago, to $920 billion to $925 billion
Of those polled in the Chicago area, 56 percent said they expect the economy to improve in 2013, representing the survey’s most positive outlook since 2009. Another 38 percent said they believe the economy is still in recession or heading back into recession.
Lou Malnati’s opens in Oak Lawn
Lou Malnati’s said it has opened a location in Oak Lawn, 5261 W. 95th St., its 35th pizzeria. The Northbrook company said it now operates 12 full-service restaurants and 23 carry-out and delivery only locations in the Chicago area.
