Orland Park-based Charter Fitness said that its annual food drive held in November resulted in more than 4,000 items being collected. Participating fitness centers collected nonperishable food items that benefitted local charities and food banks.
Since it was first held six years ago, the food drive has collected more than 29,000 items, Charter Fitness said.
ComEd warns of utility bill scam
ComEd said Wednesday it has seen an increase in reports of scam artists, claiming to be representatives of the utility, calling customers and threatening to disconnect service unless they make immediate payment. Customers are told their account is past due or that their billing cycle has changed.
Customers are told to immediately buy a prepaid credit card and call the ComEd “representative” back with the card’s personal identification number, the utility said.
ComEd said that the Illinois Commerce Commission has also gotten complaints about the scam from the utility’s customers. In most cases, ComEd said, utilities are required to give advance notice prior to disconnection of service, and customers are encouraged to call or go online to check on the status of their account.
