United launches Chicago-to-Atlantic City flights

Updated: April 1, 2014 12:29PM

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A new era has begun for Atlantic City International Airport.

United Airlines launched its first direct service from Chicago and Houston to the southern New Jersey airport on Tuesday, complete with water cannons to salute the first flight.

It’s all part of a major makeover of the airport undertaken by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which took over operations there last year.

Along with the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the Port Authority is hoping the changes will bring more economic activity to the region, particularly Atlantic City. It’s also hoped the airport will ease some of the congestion at airports in Newark and Philadelphia.

Spirit Airlines has been the primary carrier at Atlantic City Airport.
