If you’ve never experienced a banana whip, Cynthia De Zutter wants to hook you up with a taste.
It will be a featured item on the menu of Blissful Banana Cafe, which De Zutter and her husband, Dennis, hope to open early next month at 15447 S. 94th Ave. in Orland Park. Their cafe plans received the green light Tuesday from Orland Park trustees.
De Zutter said Blissful will offer healthier fare — not a deep fryer in sight, she promises — including sandwiches made with nitrate-free lunchmeat and veggie sandwiches, salads, fresh-baked scones and gourmet coffees.
The banana whip, De Zutter explains, is essentially a frozen banana that’s been put through a food processor, although Blissful will use a special banana whipping machine. The result looks and tastes a lot like soft-serve ice cream, she said, and Blissful will offer a variety of toppings — granola for the clean-living adult in you and candy chunks for when you feel like splurging a bit.
The 3,500-square-foot restaurant will be located in the shopping center at the northeast corner of 94th Avenue and Wheeler Drive. Other businesses in the center are Mario Tricoci Salon and Day Spa and Belicoso Cigar Lounge.
De Zutter, a former cheerleading coach in the area, said that plans are to be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The property has been empty for more than five years and formerly housed MoJoe’s Cafe.
