Skittles are not the first popular food brand to find itself at the center of a major controversy. The terms "the Twinkie defense" and "don’t drink the Kool-Aid" became part of the vernacular decades ago in the wake of tragic events. | AP photo

Hostess Brands, the maker of Twinkies, Sno Balls and Wonder Bread, is heading back into bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a decade.
Hostess has enough cash to keep stores stocked with its Ding Dongs, Ho Hos and other snacks for now. The 87-year-old company has a big problem: health-conscious Americans. Last year, 36 percent of Americans ate white bread in their homes, down from 54 percent in 2000, according to NPD Group. Meanwhile, Twinkies, developed in Chicago, has a mysterious cream filling that epitomizes empty calories, and carries 150 calories and 4.5 grams of fat.
