Here is a look at some crowd pleasers.
Events include Jason Petty performing “Hank and my Hometown Heroes,” a tribute to country singer Hank Williams, at Freedom Hall in Park Forest.
ART
THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO: 111 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, (312) 443-3600: “Of Gods and Glamour: The Mary and Michael Jaharis Galleries of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Art” is on display to Nov. 27, 2015.
Other exhibits include “Material Translations: Japanese Fashion from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago” to April 7, “Irving Penn: Underfoot” to May 12, and “When Collecting Was New: Photographs from the Robert A. Taub Collection” to May 12.
Admission is free to Illinois residents from 5-8 p.m. Thursdays.
SALON ARTISTS GALLERY: 294 Main St., Park Forest, (708) 833-5108: The “Abstracts” exhibit continues to March 30 and features mixed media, oils, acrylics, photographs, fractals and images manipulated on the computer.
TALL GRASS ARTS ASSOCIATION GALLERY: 367 Artists Walk, Park Forest, (708) 748-3377: “Luise Renner Retrospective” will be on display to March 31. The exhibit was curated by Richard Schmidt with assistance from Richard Renner.
The free exhibit features the two-dimensional and 3-D works of the namesake artist and illustrator who frequently exhibited in galleries in the Chicago area and southern suburbs. She died in December 2009 at the age of 63 and left behind a large body of work.
Officials said this is the first time some of her works have been exhibited. “Luise Renner Retrospective” is dedicated to her memory and presented in homage to her.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays.
UNION STREET GALLERY: 1527 Otto Blvd., Chicago Heights, (708) 754-2601: “Mad World,” a national juried exhibit, will be on display to April 6. The show’s juror is Natalie Domchenko, director of the Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago.
The 34 exhibiting artists hail from 11 different states and include Bruce Alves, Charmaine Banach, Ho Baron, Jesse Berlin, Christina Chavira, Matther Coglianese, Evelyn Davis-Walker, Karen DePirro, June Finnegan, Shelly Hokanson, Anders Johnson, Mark Kennedy, Sarah Krupp, Michael McNicholas, Jenny Meyer, Joe Milosevich, Jennifer Moore, Chris Motley, Lucy Mueller, Erinn Nordeman, Erik Ohrn, Shane Rodems, Stephan Roll, Don Sala, Leon Sarantos, David Simcik, Carrie Spencer, Nathan Taves, Colin Thomas, Jason Walker, Amanda Wood, Jee Yoon, Fotios Zemenides, and John Zilewicz.
COMEDY
CD& ME’S LAUGH THE NIGHT AWAY: 23320 S. LaGrange Road, Frankfort, (815) 469-7315: This comedy and concert series takes place weekly through April 26 on select dates at 8 p.m. with music usually starting at 9:30 p.m. except on April 6.
March 22 is slated to feature comedians Steve Iott and Josh Alton with music by the G Brothers. Tickets are $15 for general admission. Attendees must be at least 21 years old.
RIDDLES COMEDY CLUB: 5055 W. 111th St., Alsip, (708) 422-5055: Gary Wheaton will perform March 22-23.
MUSEUMS
ADLER PLANETARIUM: 1300 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (312) 922-7827: Exhibits include “The Universe: A Walk Through Space and Time,” “Our Solar System,” “Collecting Memories: The Webster Story,” “Planet Explorers” for families with ages 3-8, “Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass,” and “Shoot for the Moon.”
THE FIELD MUSEUM: 1400 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (312) 922-9410: Exhibits include “Images of the Afterlife” to June 9 and “Fashion and the Field Museum Collection: Maria Pinto” to June 16.
MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY: 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (773) 684-1414: “Animal Inside Out” recently debuted and will run through Sept. 2. Exhibits include “Science Storms,” “YOU! The Experience,” “The Great Train Story” and the Baby Chick Hatchery.
There also are daily live science demonstrations like the chemistry show “Bangs, Flashes and Fire.”
SHEDD AQUARIUM: 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (312) 939-2438: Visitors can stop by and see the baby beluga whale and the otter,Cayucos, a rescued pup from California. Cayucos joined five adult otters that are native to Alaskan waters.
Exhibits include “Jellies,” which has been extended through 2013, “Waters of the World,” “Caribbean Reef,” “Amazon Rising,” “Wild Reef” and the Polar Play Zone. Attractions include the Shedd’s aquatic show.
PLAYING LIVE
CELTIC CROSSROADS: Governors State University’s Center for Performing Arts, off University Parkway east of Governors Highway, University Park, (708) 235-2222: This concert will be at 7 p.m. March 28. Tickets are $15-$55.
JASON PETTY IN “HANK & MY HONKY TONK HEROES”: Freedom Hall, 410 Lakewood Blvd, Park Forest, (708) 747-0580: Hank Williams is known the world over as the most influential singer-songwriter. Now acclaimed performer and musician and Middle Tennessee native Petty, along with his four-piece band, will bring the story of Williams to life at 7:30 p.m. March 23.
Petty made an impression on New York’s Theater District, starring in “Hank Williams: Lost Highway,” which played to sold-out audiences at the Little Shubert theater. Audiences and critics alike said they were taken back by Petty’s amazing acting ability in his portrayal of Hank Williams.
Another sign of recognition for Petty’s performance of Williams was being honored with an Obie Award for outstanding actor.
In “Hank & my Honky Tonk Heroes, Petty gives a personal look at Williams growing up, how he became famous, who influenced the legendary singer-songwriter and current performers who are influenced by Williams.
The show is full of Williams’ hits from “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” to “Hey Good Lookin” and “Lovesick Blues.”
The audience also will hear a selection of songs from some of Williams’ influences and those who were influenced by Williams. These tunes include “Will the Circle Be Unbroken “Wine Me Up” and “Midnight in Montgomery.”
“ ‘Hank & my Honky Tonk Heroes’ will have audiences clapping their hands and stomping their feet,” officials said.
Tickets for the concert, which is sponsored by the SouthtownStar, are $24.
THEATER
THE DRAMA GROUP CHILDREN’S THEATRE’S “THE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO”: 330 W. 202nd St., Chicago Heights, (708) 755-3444: Directed by Charlie Misovye, this show will be staged at 9:30 a.m. and noon March 22, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. March 23 and 1 p.m. March 24.
“See the puppet who longs to be a ‘real’ boy in his many adventures,” officials said. “His conscience is ever present to remind him to ‘always tell the truth.’ Good deeds and unconditional love are rewarded in the end.”
The Drama Group Children’s Theatre produces two one-hour, attention-span-friendly children’s shows each season in November and March.
“These productions are great for schools, day care centers, Brownie troops, etc.,” officials said.
A meet and greet with the characters takes place after each show, and attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras.
Tickets are $6 in advance or $7 at the door for adults, ages 65 and older and students with identification. Groups of 25 or more can purchase tickets for $5 each.

LA RONDE PROJECT: Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago, (773) 327-5252: Kaitlin Fleharty, who spent the majority of her life in the Oak Lawn area and is a Richards High School alum, will perform in “The Blue Room,” which is David Hare’s 1998 adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s “La Ronde.” This play runs at 7 p.m. Saturdays, 5 p.m. Sundays and 8 p.m. Thursdays to April 14.
This production is part of La Ronde Project, a take on the racy, famously banned early 1900’s play “La Ronde” that deals with sexual morality and class ideology.
Tickets are $28 for each La Ronde Project production or $60 if all three plays are purchased. Tickets to Improvised Musical La Ronde are $10.
PORCHLIGHT MUSIC THEATRE’S “LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR & GRILL”: Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., Chicago, (773) 445-3838: This show will be staged at 7:30 p.m. March 22-23 and 3:30 p.m. March 24. Tickets are $26, or $23 for center members.
VARIETY
BACINEMA SCREENING OF “THE OSCAR NOMINATED SHORT FILMS 2013: LIVE ACTION”: Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., Chicago, (773) 445-3838: The weekly film series continues with this showing at 7:30 p.m. March 27.
Not rated, the screening runs for 1 hour and 28 minutes.
Tickets are $7.50 or $5.50 for members.
KENYA SAFARI ACROBATS: Moraine Valley Community College’s Dorothy Menker Theater, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills, (708) 974-4300: This performance will be at 2 p.m. March 23. Tickets are $10-$20.
