Here is a look at some crowd pleasers.

ART

THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO: 111 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, (312) 443-3600: Exhibits include “Of Gods and Glamour: The Mary and Michael Jaharis Galleries of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Art” to Nov. 27, 2015.

Admission is free to Illinois residents from 5-8 p.m. Thursdays.

CHRISTOPHER TROUTMAN’S “SPLICED VIEWPOINTS”: Moraine Valley Community College’s Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills, (708) 974-5500: This show will continue to Sept. 5. A reception will take place from 2-4 p.m. Aug. 29 with an artist’s talk at 3 p.m.

PETER WILHELM’S “ABSTRACTS & ABSTRACTION”: Salon Artists Gallery, 294 Main St., Park Forest, (708) 833-5108 or (708) 703-7806: The August show, which will be on display to Aug. 30, is an exhibit of abstracts using unusual designs and materials. The free opening reception will be from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 9 and feature music and goodies.

FESTIVALS

FRANKFORT’S CONCERTS ON THE GREEN: Breidert Green, Kansas and Oak streets, (815) 469-3356 (Frankfort Chamber of Commerce): Live music will be provided for no charge. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets. The schedule includes CTA on Aug. 11, Final Say on Aug. 18, and the Outcast Jazz Band on Aug. 25. In case of stormy weather, concerts will take place at the Frankfort Park District Founders Center, 140 Oak St.

NEW LENOX’S MAYOR BALDERMANN’S KID FEST: (815) 462-6400: This event will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 10.

NEW LENOX’S MOVIE NIGHTS: (815) 462-6400: This series will continue at 8 p.m. Aug. 14 with “Peter Pan.”

NEW LENOX’S SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERTS: (815) 462-6400: This series will continue at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 with Jayme Doyle and Makena Hartlin.

TINLEY PARK’S MOVIE IN THE PARK: Bettenhausen Recreation Center band shell, 8125 W. 171st St., (708) 342-4200: The festivities will continue at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 14 with “The Lion King” on a 20-foot blimp screen Attendees should bring blankets and lawn chairs. Movies will be shown in the gym in case of bad weather.

TINLEY PARK’S MUSIC IN THE PLAZA: Zabrocki Plaza in downtown Tinley Park, (708) 444-5678: Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets. Refreshments will be available for sale. Concerts in the series include Lucky Town at 7 p.m. Aug. 10, Reckless at 7 p.m. Aug. 24 and Cadillac Casanovas at 7 p.m. Sept. 7.

MUSEUMS

ADLER PLANETARIUM: 1300 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (312) 922-7827: “Cosmic Wonder” recently opened. Other exhibits include “The Universe: A Walk Through Space and Time,” “Our Solar System,” “Collecting Memories: The Webster Story,” “Planet Explorers” for families with ages 3-8, “Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass,” and “Shoot for the Moon.”

THE FIELD MUSEUM: 1400 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (312) 922-9410: Exhibits include “Scenes from the Stone Age: The Cave Paintings of Lascaux” to Sept. 8 and “Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence” to Jan. 5.

MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY: 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (773) 684-1414: “Animal Inside Out” recently debuted and will run through Sept. 2. Other exhibits include “Science Storms,” “YOU! The Experience,” “The Great Train Story” and the Baby Chick Hatchery.

There also are daily live science demonstrations like the chemistry show “Bangs, Flashes and Fire.”

SHEDD AQUARIUM: 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, (312) 939-2438: “Stingray Touch” recently opened and runs to October. Other exhibits include “Jellies,” which has been extended through 2013, “Waters of the World,” “Caribbean Reef,” “Amazon Rising,” “Wild Reef” and the Polar Play Zone. Attractions include the Shedd’s aquatic show.

PLAYING LIVE

COUNTRY CLUB HILLS THEATER: 4100 W. 183rd St. (box office), (708) 798-2616: Rock N Blues Fest will take place at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9, and tickets are $20-$80. Also, Dennis Edwards & The Temptations will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 10.

FIRST MIDWEST BANK AMPHITHEATRE: 19100 S. Ridgeland Ave., Tinley Park, (708) 614-1616: John Mayer’s Born & Raised Tour 2013 with Phillip Phillips will kick off at 7 p.m. Aug. 9. Tickets are $36 for general-admission lawn and $36-$79.50 for first or second pavilion.

Also, America’s Most Wanted Festival 2013 starring Lil Wayne will kick off at 7 p.m. Aug. 10. Other performers include T.I., 2 Chainz and G-Eazy.

Tickets are $29.75 for general-admission lawn or pit area or $29.75-$119.75 for first or second pavilion. Tickets are available at LiveNation.com, Ticketmaster.com, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000 or at the venue box office.

VARIETY

BACINEMA SCREENING OF “HANNAH ARENDT”: Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., Chicago, (773) 445-3838: The weekly film series continues with this screening at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14. Tickets are $7.50, or $5.50 for center members.

ZOPPE ITALIAN FAMILY CIRCUS: CD&ME, 23320 S. LaGrange Road, Frankfort, (815) 469-7315: Part storytelling, part hair-raising acrobatics and part European equestrian tradition, the Zoppe Italian Family Circus unites all elements into an enchanting story line under the big top. Narrated by Nino the Clown, this captivating Chicago-based circus has been in existence for more than 160 years and owned continuously by the Zoppe family, first in Italy and later in the United States. “A big part of our event business at CD&ME is starting traditions and keeping them going. We think the Zoppe Family Circus has done an excellent job of keeping the circus tradition going, and we love being able to bring them to town to entertain our guests. They’re family entertainment in its truest form,” CD&ME co-owner Dean Vaundry said. Performance times are 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9-10 and 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11. Tickets are $18 for adults, $9 for ages 4-12 and free for ages younger than 3 and can be purchased at cdandme.com.
