Here is a look at what’s going on in the Southland.
News includes Oak Forest.
I Am An American Day Parade
The Oak Forest Veterans Commission will host the second annual I Am An American Day Parade at 11 a.m. Sunday on Central Avenue between 151st and 156th streets.
The patriotic parade will lead to the Oak Forest Park District’s Old Times Picnic, which officials said is a fun-filled event for all ages.
“Many Oak Forest residents have fond memories of previous I Am An American Day parades, which took place on Cicero Avenue in the 1950s and 1960s,” Veterans Commission chair Joe Pilch said.
“We are excited to bring the parade back to Oak Forest and believe that pairing it with the picnic will create a festive atmosphere for friends, families and neighbors.”
A variety of groups are participating in this year’s parade. Participants include Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, sports teams, veterans groups and local businesses.
This year’s parade will feature members of the U.S. Army Reserve band.
In addition to the parade, the Veterans Commission will host reenactments of the War of 1812 on Sept. 28 and 29 at the Oak Fest grounds, 157th Street and Lorel Avenue.
The battle reenactments provide an opportunity to learn more about the War of 1812, which brought the United States “The Star- Spangled Banner,” the current White House and a strong national identity.
