Get Up and Go! for Dec. 2, 2013

Updated: January 3, 2014 6:09AM

Here is a Frankfort event worth getting out of the house for on Dec. 2.

Poinsettia Sales: Students in the Special Services Transition Program at Lincoln-Way East High School, 201 Colorado Ave., Frankfort, offer poinsettias for purchase at the House of Blooms (the school’s greenhouse) until they are sold out.

Students began growing the poinsettias from rooted cuttings in August, learning how to keep them moist in early stages and then pinching their tops to promote growth.

About 50 students were involved, giving them an opportunity to learn job skills such as how to work as a team, how to follow multistep directions, how to advocate for themselves and how to problem solve.

Students are selling the 6-inch poinsettia plants for $7 each. Each plant includes a decorative foil cover, a handmade holiday planter decoration and bow. The customer has the choice of red, white and pink poinsettias.

Community members interested in purchasing a poinsettia should contact Lincoln-Way East’s Special Services Department at (815) 464-4121 or email to
