Get Up and Go! for Jan. 9, 2014

Updated: February 10, 2014 10:52AM

Here is a Palos Hills event worth getting out of the house for from Jan. 9 to Feb. 7.

“All the Stories She Was Ever Told”: Moraine Valley Community College’s Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery, 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills, presents this Carrie Ann Schumacher exhibit to Feb. 7.

The show was inspired by a box of free romance novels. Schumacher took the pages of these novels and other sources to construct full-size wedding dresses.

Themes of femininity and the traditional role of women in society often are amplified in romantic literature. Schumacher’s repurposing of these materials can force the viewer to revisit and rethink these biases.

The creation of these pieces enabled Schumacher to explore milestones of her womanhood and merge them with memories and stories of other women, creating a universal narrative.

There will be a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, with an artists’ talk at 3 p.m.

The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. Information: (708) 974-4300, morainevalley.edu/fpac/gallery or carrieannschumacher.com.
