Family restaurant opens at familiar site

Since Addison’s Family Restaurant opened Nov. 20 in Joliet, the owners and staff are proud of their four-week streak but want more challengers to keep coming.
“We have not gotten one food complaint so far,” Shirley Carpenter said. “The menu has gotten a lot of praise for ‘home cooked’ meals, not fast food, at decent prices.”
Carpenter has spent more than 30 years in the restaurant industry and formerly operated On The Rocks in Romeoville. Carpenter and Mario Ortega first met while they were waiting tables as teenagers and later reconnected to open Addison’s along with Tony Esparza. Ortega also owns Mama’s Restaurant in Joliet.
“We all agreed this area needed a restaurant again,” Carpenter said.
The site at 3501 Channahon Road (Route 6) was occupied for many years as the 24-hour Sara’s Place until 2009. In February, the spot reopened as the upscale Hoof & Fin Roadhouse but was out of business by July. Carpenter, Esparza and Ortega have no affiliations with those businesses and are renting space from owners of the building who operate the Liquid Therapy nightclub and share a public hallway and bathrooms.
“I spent six weeks (redecorating) around the clock before we opened,” Carpenter said. Carpenter put brighter paint on the walls and a scenic photo above each booth. The wall of the coffee bar at the back is covered with sayings such as “Can’t Fix Stupid,” “DO Something Creative Everyday” and “Today’s Menu: Take It or Leave It.”
Though the menu tries to have something for everyone with American standards, Greek, Mexican and Italian dishes and Asian stir fry. Breakfast and full lunch/dinner entrees are available anytime.
“Our chiliques have been incredibly popular,” Day Manager Sherie Phillips said. “It’s a Mexican-style skirt steak served with homemade salsa and corn chips, veggies and sour cream.”
Phillips also noted the burger pattys are handmade at the restaurant as are two soups each day.
Addison’s employs 14 people and was named by Carpenter as she watched TV news taking place on Addison Street in Chicago and thought it sounded like “something normal that wasn’t too goofy.”
Addison’s has a carryout menu and delivers to businesses in the Interstate 55/Route 6 corridor with future plans for residential delivery.
There is also a banquet room that holds up to 75 people.
