Here is a Palos Hills event worth getting out of the house for on Aug. 16.
OPEN VIEWING NIGHT: Moraine Valley Community College will host another session of open telescope viewing at 8:15 p.m. at 9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. Other open viewings are scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Sept. 13 and 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11. Viewings will be canceled if the sky is cloudy or there are high winds.
Open viewings are at the telescope dome on the G. Jack Bradley Observation Deck on the west side of the college’s Nature Study Area, off Kean Avenue near 107th Street.
Observers can park in lots east of Building P or in the west section of the Building D parking lot and then walk on the path to the observation deck. For safety reasons, children not accompanied by an adult or supervisor will be turned away.
Retired associate professor Tom McCague, who has been an amateur astronomer for more than 40 years, hosts the viewings. Attendees should dress for the weather and bring binoculars if possible.
