Greetings, fellow Oak Lawnians and Happy Halloween! To all our trick-or-treaters, have fun on Oct. 31 and be careful out there.
Giving Back 2 Becky, a fundraiser for Becky Clifford, will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Nov. 9 at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., Merrionette Park.
Becky suffered a severe spinal cord injury on June 13, 2008 after tripping and falling outside her home and striking her head. The fall left her unable to move. At the time, Becky was living alone, so she was not found until a neighbor discovered her the next morning.
The blow was so severe, the young woman was rendered a quadriplegic.
Carol Sheahan is a longtime friend of Becky who met her during their freshman year at Richards High School in Oak Lawn. Recalling the tragic accident, Sheahan said, “Becky remembers all of it, but she was in and out of consciousness. She has very little movement in her arms, but she can talk and she’s 100 percent in her head.”
Prior to her accident, Becky worked at the Hilton hotel in Oak Lawn for 16 years as the sales and catering manager.
Today, Becky relies on a 24-hour, live-in caregiver at her Oak Lawn home. The medical expenses are overwhelming for Becky and her family, particularly the caregiver costs that aren’t covered by insurance.
Sheahan recalled Becky’s life before her injury.
“Becky was our hub when we needed to make plans to eat or travel. She went out a lot with her friends in groups to restaurants or we’d have Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe parties. Becky was our person. She handled all of that.”
Becky also loved to travel, Sheahan said.
“Traveling was her passion. She can’t travel anymore, but she loves watching movies,” Sheahan said.
Becky’s friends still get together with her for bunco parties or those Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe parties that she enjoys so much.
“We’re hoping we get 1,200 to 1,400 people there (Nov. 9),” she said. “We’ll have a raffle, silent auction for trips and items, split the pot, and we’ll have two bands, The American Sons and The Opinions.”
Admission is $30 online or at the door. Proceeds will be used to provide Becky with the medical care and equipment that she requires.
A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to other families dealing with similar spinal cord injuries. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.givingback2becky.com.
