This monthly book discussion event at the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago features area writers who read from and discuss their works.

Next up is Hilary Wagner, author of the children’s fantasy novel “Nightshade City,” at 2 p.m. Dec. 29 .

The presentation will be geared to middle school readers and their families.

“Nightshade City” is set in the Catacombs, an underground kingdom of super-intelligent rats.

An evil dictatorship has taken control. Three young orphan rats team with an archenemy of the dictator’s henchman to wage rebellion and create a new city, Nightshade City.

Reviews of the book, which was released in October, compare the adventure to the Redwall series for its thrilling adventures, compelling story and the creation of a heroic animal society.

Wagner’s first book in the Nightshade Chronicles, “Nightshade City” will be followed by a second book set for release in October.

During Wagner’s visit , she will answer interview questions from facilitator Penny Golden, read from “Nightshade City” and be available to answer questions from the audience.

Copies of her book will be available to purchase and be signed by the author.
