When people think of female wrestling, they may picture World Wrestling Entertainment’s Divas or Total Nonstop Action Wrestling’s Knockouts.
But there’s a roster of tough women at Shimmer Women Athletes who give their all in the ring.
“Shimmer is one of the most unique wrestling products out there today, as we present events comprised of over 30 of the top female wrestlers from around the world,” promoter Dave Prazak said.
“The women aren’t just an afterthought at Shimmer. They are the stars of the show. We film two full 120-plus minute DVDs during each day of taping, offering typically over 20 live matches during each day.”
Saraya and Britani Knight will be making their U.S. debuts at this weekend’s Shimmer tapings.
“Saraya has been the standout female competitor on the British wrestling scene for over 15 years now, and has never had the opportunity to wrestle in the United States before. Her daughter, Britani, just recently turned 18 and is pegged by many fans and promoters throughout Europe as a future star in the industry,” Prazak said.
“Britani also recently had a tryout with WWE. Not since the era of Cora and Debbie Combs in the early ’80s have we seen a mother-and-daughter tag team in women’s wrestling, so they bring something very special to the table in the Shimmer tag division.”
The international flavor at Shimmer is part of what helps it to shine.
“One of our main events at our last set of tapings featured Japan’s Ayumi Kurihara vs. Australia’s Madison Eagles, in a bout for Madison’s Shimmer championship. The idea that two highly skilled wrestlers from different parts of the world were able to captivate an audience in a ring in Berwyn is something we’re very proud of,” Prazak said.
“This weekend, Kurihara will face one of the true icons of women’s wrestling in both Japan and Mexico, and one of her mentors, in Ayako Hamada. Though neither speak much English, they will no doubt have the Berwyn Eagles Club on the edges of their seats, with the universal language of pro wrestling.”
