Greetings fellow Oak Lawnians.
Boy Scout Troop 618 from Trinity Lutheran Church is having a spaghetti dinner 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 in the church hall, 9701 S. Brandt Ave.
Troop committee member Art Flores said this will be Trinity’s 19th year hosting a Boy Scout dinner. Although Art has plenty of experience organizing these dinners, he said planning starts months in advance for the 500 guests they’re anticipating.
The dinner is the troop’s biggest fundraiser. Most troops have one big function or fundraiser, and for this troop, it’s the spaghetti dinner. Proceeds from the dinner will offset costs for trips the troop will take, including one to Owasippie. Last year’s dinner was a huge success, Art said, raising about $8,000.
When Troop 618 was formed in 1993, there were only five scouts. Today, the troop has 23 scouts and 27 adult leaders, including scoutmaster Bill Cunningham. Bill’s son, Dylan, is a member of Troop 618, and his wife, Laura, is a committee member.
Troop members are from surrounding high schools, including Oak Lawn Community, Richards, St. Rita, Brother Rice and Marist. Younger troop members attend Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School.
“Each scout’s ultimate goal is to be an Eagle Scout,” Art said.
To achieve Eagle Scout, a scout must earn 21 merit badges, serve actively in a troop for at least six months after becoming a Life Scout, and plan, develop and execute a service project that benefits his church, school or community. After these requirements are met, he then appears before a board of review.
Since 1993, Trinity has turned out an impressive number of Eagle Scouts. Today, 19 scouts have achieved Eagle Scout status, including, most recently, Adam Smith.
Cost of the dinner is $6 for adults and $4 for children between ages 3 and 12. Dinner includes either meat or marinara sauce, salad and bread. Soda and dessert will be available for 25 cents each. Troop members also will sell raffle tickets for themed baskets.
