Jason Freeman began as a correspondent for the SouthtownStar, then known as the Daily Southtown, in January 2004.
A former SouthtownStar editor once called Freeman a “super stringer” for his ability to write as many as eight or nine feature stories a week while simultaneously penning a lost-and-found column and contributing a dozen towns to the newspaper’s police blotter.
He has worked in community news and as a weekend reporter since becoming a full-time staff writer in 2008.
Freeman has written the weekly Carpe Weekend entertainment column (which now appears on Thursdays) since February 2010 and the daily Get Up and Go! feature since 2009.
He also mans the SouthtownStar’s Pets o’ the Week, Your Pets and A Thousand Words features and works closely with the Neighborhood Star.
A Tinley Park native, Freeman is a guitarist, singer, drummer and songwriter and plays in two local bands, Waking the Extinct and what began as the Southtown All-Stars. The latter features SouthtownStar sports editor Phil Arvia and former SouthtownStar graphic designer Bret Figura.
Freeman enjoys listening to Led Zeppelin, reading anything by Kurt Vonnegut and watching reruns of “The X-Files,” his favorite TV show.
He witnessed three unidentified objects fly over his hometown in 2004 and again in 2005. He has since written several articles on the experience and appeared on the 2007 “Invasion Illinois” episode of the History channel TV show “UFO Hunters.”
