NEW LENOX — Gone are the days of drive-in movies, but New Lenox has the next best thing: an outdoor theater.
All summer long, the village will feature movie nights Wednesdays in the commons. About 8 or 8:30 p.m., a big screen will drop down in the pavilion to show a G- or PG-rated film, said Trustee Annette Bowden. Attendance is free.
Bowden announced the movie schedule Monday. All the junior highs in the area were invited to help select the what would be shown. Three students each from Liberty and St. Jude’s participated.
The village’s performing arts committee brought about 25 options that the committee believed were appropriate, Bowden said. The kids narrowed down the selection from there. The 1981 classic Indiana Jones movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was a favorite.
“The kids jumped at it,” Bowden said. “It was unanimous because we have the kids vote on it.”
The schedule: June 6, “Spooky Buddies;” June 13, “Cars 2;” June 20, “The Adventures of Tintin;” June 27, “Raiders of the Lost Ark;” July 11, “Puss and Boots;” July 18, “Jack and Jill;” July 25, “The Wizard of Oz;” Aug. 1, “The Princess and the Frog;” Aug. 8, “The Muppets;” and Aug. 15, “The Zookeeper.”
On Aug. 22, “Ladies Night Out” will be sponsored by Home Depot. Bowden said that the store’s district manager, Manny Romero, has a lot of great ideas for that event.
On July 25, the village will have an interactive event during “The Wizard of Oz.” Attendees will receive goodie bags and other special items that the village will hand out.
