Greetings, fellow Oak Lawnians! The Musichorale Community Choir’s annual scholarship contest for amateur vocalists and instrumentalists is underway. It’s open to students in grades six through 12, and contestants are not required to live in Oak Lawn.
Applications for instrumentalists must be postmarked by Feb. 15, and the application fee is $25. The vocal portion of the contest, which is now closed, is open only to high school students.
Auditions for vocal contestants begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 26 at 10 a.m., and those for instrumental contestants start at 10 a.m. March 1. The public is invited to attend the auditions, which will take place at Oak Lawn Community Church, 9000 Ridgeland Ave., Oak Lawn.
Contestants can select their own piece, but it must be performed as the original piece. Instrumental contestants will have six minutes to perform, and vocal contestants will have five minutes.
Musichorale member Kathy Marassa said the vocal contest’s first-place winner will be announced at the Noel Concert on Dec. 8. He or she will receive a $1,000 award and be a featured soloist at the holiday concert. More than $3,500 in prizes will be awarded to those finishing in first, second and third place.
The choir hosts Christmas and spring concerts each year and also performs at parties, weddings, dedications, funerals and other events from September through April. This year’s holiday concert, “T’was the Night Before Christmas,” will mark the choir’s 67th year hosting its Noel Concert. It’s scheduled for 3:20 p.m. Dec. 8 in the Ozinga Auditorium at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. College Drive, Palos Heights.
Musichorale was founded in 1947 by Art Silhan, who spent 33 years as choir director. When Silhan stepped down in 1980, his son, Jeffrey, succeeded him. Now matching his dad’s 33 years in the position, Jeffrey Silhan has no plans to stop.
The choir is always looking to add members. Marassa said the choir has 75 members, “but our goal is to eventually have 100 singers up there on the stage. We welcome everyone.”
Rehearsals are at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday at Oak Lawn Community Church, the choir’s home base. Membership is open to anyone in high school and older who enjoys music or singing. A musical background or knowledge of how to read sheet music is not required. Dues per season are $25 for high school students, $37.50 for new members and $50 for returning members.
For contest applications or membership information, visit Musichorale’s website at www.musichorale.org or call its 24-hour number at 312-409-6661.
