Twelve years after first hearing the “Brooklyn, The Musical” soundtrack, Hammond’s Towle Theater will present the Midwest premiere of the show opening July 12.

“A Midwest premiere includes Chicago,” Towle Theater managing director Jeff Casey said.

“The opportunity to present a piece of theater that practically no one has ever seen is amazing.”

Towle Theater has set itself apart from other theaters in the area by continuing to focus on presenting audiences with new works, often presenting regional, Indiana and even national premieres.

“Northwest Indiana is pretty saturated with theater” Casey said, “and while that’s great, it compels us to do work that no one else is doing.”

Casey is the director and choreographer of the production and the cast includes Adrienne Walker, Kyrie Anderson, Kevin Mackowicz, Michael Carey and Antoinette Gomez.

“Brooklyn, The Musical” is a show within a show.

The characters who are first introduced to our audience is a troupe of homeless performers who call themselves the City Weeds.

They perform a musical sidewalk fairy tale based on the real-life events of one of the players.

“One of the elements that drew us to present this show is the awareness it brings to the plight of homeless people and their struggle to not be invisible to those that hustle past them every day,” said Kevin Bellamy, director of administration for Towle Theater and costume and set designer for the production.

“The writers of ‘Brooklyn’ are able to raise our awareness without preaching to us, something that is very difficult to do,” Casey said.

“Brooklyn, The Musical” will run July 12-28 at Towle Theater, 5205 Hohman Ave. Reservations: (219) 937-8780. Information: towletheater.org.
