Halloween is just around the corner, and area theaters are gearing up with some dark and menacing productions.

The Chicago Street Theatre’s production of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” will open Oct. 18 and run to Nov. 2.

This new adaptation is written by Jeffrey Hatcher and based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story of the same name.

That story features depravity, lust, love and horror and explores what happens when a brilliant doctor finds a horrifying way to tap into the monster that hides within each of us.

Hatcher’s script is a modern take on this literary favorite with a smart, sexy and rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

Directed by Bob Cooley, the cast includes:

♦ Matt McCann as Dr. Henry Jekyll.

♦ Kat Lutze as Elizabeth.

♦ Dave Pera as Enfield/Hyde 2/Others.

♦ Don Taylor as Carew/Sanderson/Inspector/Others.

♦ Tom O’Neill as Lanyon/Hyde 3.

♦ Dan Matern at Utterson/Hyde 1/Others.

♦ Andrea Bertsch as Poole/Hyde 4/Maid/Others.

The theater will host a Halloween costume party on Oct. 31 with food and fun before the show. Special tickets are required. Call (219) 464-1636 for reservations.

The Chicago Street Theatre is at 154 W. Chicago St. in Valparaiso. Information: chicagostreet.org.

He soon discovers a dark secret underlying the politics of this community and quickly finds himself in the middle of murder, mayhem and intrigue in this film noir-style thriller comedy.
