Food Network star Robert Irvine (“Restaurant: Impossible”) has cooked up an unusual live show.

He will bring that event to the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet on April 20.

“Robert Irvine Live,” the namesake’s first theatrical tour, will incorporate challenges, audience interaction and video projection.

“This is not just me cooking on stage for two hours because that has been done before,” Irvine said in an email.

“I wanted to do something totally different that makes cooking a vehicle for being able to create a theatrical event.”

Preview performances found Irvine rappelling down balconies and being challenged to feed members of the audience with no knowledge of the ingredients while a timer counted down.

The show will be different at each location, and Irvine said he has chosen to remain in the dark about what challenges will be thrown at him each night.

“We basically have constructed a set list of cooking challenges, much like a rock band would put together a list of songs for the evening. The big difference is our ‘lead singer’ has no idea what that list will entail,” producer Joshua Lingenfelter said.

“My job is to try every way I can to trip Robert up.”

The show also will feature a host described as a “live and interactive computer-generated character” that can talk to Irvine and react to what he and the audience are doing.

A BIT OF BACKGROUND

Chef Robert Irvine goes where few chefs dare.

He is equally at home preparing his creative dishes for intimate gatherings or for huge crowds, from 6,000 servicemen and women on a U.S. aircraft carrier to a celebrity-studded after-party at the Academy Awards.

Irvine is the star of Food Network’s “Dinner: Impossible,” “Restaurant: Impossible” and “Worst Cooks in America” and the author of “Mission: Cook! My Life, My Recipes, and Making the Impossible Easy (HarperCollins).

He has prepared his culinary creations for the British royal family, heads of state and honored guests aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia and for high-ranking dignitaries, politicians and VIPs as part of the Guest Chef program at the White House.

Irvine also has made culinary creations as executive chef at Trump Taj Mahal Casino Hotel and across America on Irvine’s hit Food Network series.

A native of England, Irvine joined the British Royal Navy as a teenager, where his skills in the kitchen soon came to the attention of his superiors.

In more than 25 years in the culinary profession, he has transcended the limitations of recipes and rote techniques with an approach to cooking that is his own.

In that time, Irvine literally has cooked his way across the globe, from Europe to the Far East, across the Caribbean and throughout the Americas.

In 2007, he was named both an ambassador of the Culinary Institute of America and one of the 25 fittest guys in America by Men’s Fitness magazine.

The list also included professional basketball player Kobe Bryant, retired professional tennis player Andy Roddick and actor Matt Damon.
