Here’s a look at art exhibits that are either on display or will be on display soon at the Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., Chicago.
‘Rick Therrio: Murky Stories’
On display to May 27 in the Theater Gallery, “Rick Therrio: Murky Stories” features this statement:
“Life consists of pleasant and unpleasant surprises. Nothing is ever as it appears. Everyone is driven by conflicting goals and ambitions, and what we are left with are the murky stories of our existence.”
‘At the Heart of the City: Western Avenue in 24 Paintings’
Artist Jane Sloss documents each mile of Western Avenue in watercolors which are on exhibit to May 28 in the Atrium Gallery.
The works in “At the Heart of the City: Western Avenue in 24 Paintings” provide glimpses of the neighborhoods through which Western Avenue passes, illustrate places which evoke nostalgia, and reveal portions of the street unknown to Chicagoans who live at opposite extremes of the avenue.
‘Adventures in Polysemantics’
Chicago-based artists Marilyn and Peter Franks and Brian Yates exhibit sculpture, painting and photography in “Adventures in Polysemantics” to June 16 in the East Gallery.
The artists share an interest in working concurrently across several media while allowing each to inform the other.
‘Digital Photo Contest and Exhibit’
The fifth annual “Digital Photo Contest and Exhibit” features work by amateur and professional photographers, ages 21 to 35, who entered a competition hosted by the BAC Young Adult Board.
Designed to provide opportunities for emerging artists to compete and exhibit their work, the contest invited up to five submissions per artist and was back by demand.
Works had to have been completed within the last three years and professionally finished to be eligible for the exhibit. The subject matter includes landscapes, people, animals and travel.
These works by winners and finalists will be exhibited from June 1-25 in the Atrium and Theater galleries.
Exhibiting artists include Cristen Adams, Jamilah Adebesin Mason, Amanda Alvarez, Jo Beaudreau, Amanda Arroyo-Cabrera, Adrienne Baksh, Elizabeth Blackburn, Samantha Blackburn, Orlando Cabrera, Kenny Chmielewski, Matthew Coglianese, Nicholas P. Decker, Julius Ryan Fassl, Karen Gruber, Raymond Hayen, Scott Hermanson and Rachel Hewitt.
Jennifer Jankowski, Andrew Krumtinger, Reginald Lualhati, Chris Martin, Juan Martinez, Colleen McCarthy, Bridget Mitchell, Peter Mlot, Gabor Nagy, Jen Para, Janna Sellers, Laura Slonskis, Kristen Taylor, Jeremy Towns, Monika Thorpe and Samantha Wascher also are among the exhibiting artists.
The contest, which was judged by Rebecca C. Healy and Lee Bey, was sponsored in part by George Poulos Photography, Blackbird Gallery & Framing and Cakewalk Chicago.

An opening reception and awards presentation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. June 22.
Admission to gallery is free. Hours are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and 1-6 p.m. Sundays.
