Although it can make for some long days, heading to Shimmer Women Athletes DVD tapings is always a treat.
The female-focused pro wrestling promotion will mark a milestone with its events set for Oct. 27-28 in Berywn, as the shows will include the taping of Volume 50.
“When we ran the first Shimmer event in late 2005, it was simply to test the market to see if there would be enough fan interest to present an athletically focused women’s wrestling product,” Shimmer Women Athletes promoter Dave Prazak said.
“During the time since, we have slowly developed a following, both in the Chicagoland area as well as internationally through our DVD series.
“I never would have imagined hitting the 50-show mark, but the fact that we have is certainly a testament to the in-ring skills of each of the women on the roster.”
Some of the talent being brought in for these DVD tapings includes Santana Garrett, Su Yung, Allysin Kay and Ryo Mizunami.
“Mizunami comes to us through the assistance of the Joshi4Hope office in Japan, which has provided Shimmer with access to numerous Japanese stars over the past several years,” Prazak said.
“Su Yung and Allysin Kay impressed during previous Shimmer tryout matches and have earned a place on our main roster beginning this weekend.
“Santana is a promising up-and-coming talent who has been making a name for herself in Florida and is eager to show the fans in Berwyn what she is capable of inside the ring.”
A number of Shimmer talent has received recognition recently, as the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Female 50 rankings include staples Cheerleader Melissa and Mercedes Martinez and Shimmer champion Saraya Knight among the top 10.
“It’s great to see our female athletes given recognition for what they have been able to accomplish outside of the realm of the major wrestling promotions,” Prazak said.
“Being highly ranked in a mainstream magazine is validation that a wrestler doesn’t necessarily need to be featured on national television in order to be successful and respected in the industry.”
While a number of promotions focused on women have emerged, Shimmer still remains one of the top in the world.
“Shimmer provides wrestling fans with a true alternative to what they see on television every week,” Prazak said.
“We are an all-female wrestling promotion, which puts emphasis on high-quality matches featuring the most skilled women in the industry from all parts of the world.
“This weekend’s events in Berwyn will feature talents from Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the United States.
“It makes us not only a different product in comparison to the WWE women’s division, but also a very unique show in comparison to your typical independent wrestling event.
“At Shimmer we pride ourselves, first and foremost, on the wrestling skill of the women on our roster
“For fans who are sick of seeing two-minute-long women’s matches on television every week, Shimmer is the most action-packed women’s wrestling show in the country today, where the athletes are not held back from giving you your money’s worth.”
