‘Music Man’ starts Beverly Theatre Guild’s 50th season

Billed as the longest-running community theater company in Chicago, the Beverly Theatre Guild is celebrating five decades of being on stage.
The first show of its Fabulous at 50 season is the popular “The Music Man” directed by David Zak.
During the 2011-12 season, Zak directed the acclaimed “Little Women: The Musical” and he is a renowned director worldwide).
“The Music Man” will be musically directed by Oliver Townsend, pianist for the hit musical “Wicked” and other national touring shows.
Choreography for “The Music Man” will be by Tracy Strimple, who has a master of arts degree in musical theater from Emerson College in Boston.
Performances will run for two weekends from Oct. 26-28 and Nov. 2-4.
“The Music Man” is one of America’s favorite musicals, which tells the story of con man Harold Hill, who poses as a boy’s band organizer and leader, sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash.
A prim librarian and piano teacher, Marian Paroo, sees through him, but when he helps her younger brother overcome his fear of social interactions due to his lisp, she begins to fall in love with Hill.
In turn, Hill starts falling for Marian and taking risks of being caught to win her over.
All performances will take place in the Baer Theatre, at Morgan Park Academy Arts Center, 2153 W. 111th St., Chicago.
Curtain will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 26-28 and Nov. 2-3 and 2 p.m. Oct. 28 and Nov. 4.
