Health Briefs For June 6

Updated: July 7, 2012 8:43AM

West Nile Virus Precautions: The first mosquito pools positive for West Nile Virus in suburban Cook County were reported recently by state public health officials. Although the first pools were located in Lemont and Norridge, officials are warning residents throughout suburban Cook County to take precautions. The most effective way to prevent becoming infected is to get rid of standing water in pet bowls, flower pots, old tires, baby pools and toys; make sure doors and windows have tightly fitting screens; keep weeds and grass cut short; and when outdoors between dusk and dawn, cover skin with lightly colored lose fitting clothing and use mosquito repellent with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms of illness and never become ill. But illness can occur three to 15 days after an infected mosquito bite and cause symptoms of fever, headache and body aches. People age 50 and older are at a higher risk for serious complications from encephalitis or meningitis. Information: www.cookcountypublichealth.org.
