Here is a look at events and opportunities to help Southland charities.
Books Sought: Books are being collected to enhance the library of the Illinois Youth Facility, a maximum security facility in Joliet. People can drop off books appropriate for boys ages 13 to 20 at Curves, 20833 S. LaGrange Road, Frankfort. Scholastic and chapter books, workbooks, kids magazines and comics, hard covers and paperbacks are sought. Information: Kay MacNeil at (815) 469-1294 or Nella Piccolin at (815) 469-4996.
Special Delivery: The food pantry at Together We Cope in Tinley Park overflowed in May as U.S. Postal Service employees and TWC volunteers delivered 39,600 pounds of food donated by area residents. The local drive was associated with the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger initiative. Many Tinley Park residents participated in this year’s drive, donating approximately 40,000 pounds of food in all. Keith Sahs, general postmaster of the Tinley Park office, said, “All of our carriers participate. Some even come in on their days off or utilize leave so they can help with the event.”
Tee Off Fore Education: Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163 will hold its second annual golf outing, Teeing Off Fore Education, June 14 at the University Park Golf Club. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with lunch at 11:30 a.m. Shotgun start is 1 p.m. and dinner is at 6 p.m. Cost is $500 for a foursome or $150 per person, which includes a deli lunch, golf, dinner with jazz music, contests and prizes. Vagina Monologues: The original Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. June 22 and 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. June 23 at Prairie State College, Halsted Street and Vollmer Road, Chicago Heights. The production is sponsored by Prairie State College and Soroptimist International of Illiana, and benefits South Suburban Family Shelter and the 2012 Spotlight Campaign for Women and Girls in Haiti. For The Band: Palos Heights School District 128’s school band is sponsoring a car wash 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 23 at Independence Junior High School, 6610 W. Highland Drive, Palos Heights. Proceeds will assist in the purchase and repair of instruments and sheet music. Rain date is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 30.
Golf Outing: SouthSTAR Services’ annual golf outing is June 25 at Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete. Shotgun start is 9 a.m. with lunch midway through the course, buffet dinner and beverages throughout the day. Tickets are $150 per person and $50 for dinner only. SouthSTAR provides services to men, women and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Illinois and northwest Indiana. Sponsorships are available. Fore Mammo: Joliet Catholic Academy will hold a Mammo’s Whack That Ball golf outing on June 29 at the Sanctuary Golf Course in New Lenox in honor of student Matt Mammosser, who recently died. Check-in is at noon, with golf beginning at 1 p.m. Cost is $100 per person or $400 per foursome, which includes golf, range, cart, lunch and dinner. Moonlight bike ride: The Long After Twilight Ends Ride starts at 10:30 p.m. June 30 beginning and ending at Buckingham Fountain at Congress Parkway and Columbus Drive in Chicago. The event kicks off with a band, followed by a 25-mile bike ride at 1 a.m. July 1. Cost is $45 and includes T-shirt and goody bag. Bike rentals are available. L.A.T.E. Fore Education: District 230 Foundation will host its annual golf outing July 23 at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park. This event supports Sandburg, Stagg and Andrew high schools. Dianne Masters Cup: The Crisis Center for South Suburbia will host the annual Dianne Masters Cup golf outing and dinner Aug. 14 at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park. Shotgun start is at 9 a.m. Ticket price of $150 per person includes golf, continental breakfast, lunch, cocktails, dinner, raffle prizes and contests on the course. Dinner-only tickets are $50. Housing for homeless: Applications for South Suburban Public Action to Deliver Shelter’s new housing program are available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the agency’s main office, 414 W. Lincoln Highway in Chicago Heights. PADS has six renovated apartments in Blue Island and Oak Lawn available. LINK-up: The Together We Cope staff is available June 19 to assist south suburban residents applying for LINK cards (food stamp program), and to answer questions about the SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program) application process. Garden Center Fundraiser: Knights of Columbus St. Louis de Montfort Council No. 14553 will host a fundraiser on June 18 at Chuck’s Cafe, 6501 W. 79th St., Burbank. The Knights receive 15 percent of the subtotal of all receipts of patrons who present a special coupon that day. Proceeds benefit the Garden Center in Burbank to help pay for the vandalism done to its office. Information: www.kofc14553.org.
Feeding Starving Children: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 295 Sauk Trail, Frankfort, will host a mobile packing event for Feed My Starving Children June 22 and 23. Scoops of Hope: The Neumann family will have a Scoops of Hope Breast Cancer fundraiser 3 to 7 p.m. June 23 at First United Methodist Church, 10000 S. Central Ave., Oak Lawn. Ice cream, pie, a bake sale, jump houses, face painting, a silent auction and more are included. Banking On Food: Marquette Bank will collect nonperishable food items at its 24 locations through June 23 during its fifth annual Neighborhood Food Drive. Donations will be distributed to local pantries and neighborhood food banks through the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
Fore Art: The Beverly Arts Center’s fourth annual Fore Art golf outing will be June 25 at Ridge Country Club, 10522 S. California Ave., Chicago. Registration is at 11 a.m. and the shotgun start is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Cost is $300 per golfer and $1,200 per foursome and includes 18 holes of golf, green fees, cart, lunch, cocktail hour and dinner. Caddies will be provided for an additional fee. Lunch will be available 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a cocktail hour and putting contest will be at 5:30 p.m., and dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation of awards. Stand Up For Health: CD & Me is hosting a Stand Up for MS benefit June 29 at 23320 S. LaGrange Road, Frankfort. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. A standup comedy show begins at 8 p.m. Comedians include Ken Severa, Mike Toomey and Brian Hicks. Cost is $20; food and drinks are available for an additional cost. Golf Gala: The Rich Township District 227 High School Educational Foundation will host its second annual Golf Outing & Gala June 29 at the University Golf Club and Conference Center, 23520 Crawford Ave., University Park. Golf will be noon to 4:30 p.m. with dinner following at 5:30 p.m. Golf and dinner are $100. Dinner only is $45. Proceeds benefit scholarships for District 227 students. Fighting 4 Fitz: A benefit for Alex Fitzgerald, a student at Jack Hille Middle School in Oak Forest who was struck by a car and severely injured April 20 while walking with his friends, will be 2 to 7 p.m. July 1 at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St. in Merrionette Park. The cost is $30 per adult, $10 for children ages 6 to 13, and includes draft beer and wine for adults, food, pop, raffles, auctions and activities for kids.
