Shoulder Arthritis: An orthopedic surgeon will discuss facts about arthritis of the shoulder, including diagnosis, symptoms and current treatment options at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at Advocate Christ Medical Center, 4440 W. 95th St., Oak Lawn. Information: (800) 323-8622, code 1G62.
Medication Management: Orland Township, in conjunction with the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, has collaborated to launch a health promotion program entitled “Medication Management in Older Adults.” The free program will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 6 in the Orland Township board room, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park. Pharmacists from the University of Illinois will be available to help people understand the medicines they are taking, look for problems while taking these medications and provide information on the safe use of medications. The presentation will focus on diabetic issues relevant to the older individual. Participants are asked to bring all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, including herbals, in their original bottles. This includes any topicals or injections. Atrial Fibrillation Education: Physicians will be present free educational sessions to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about atrial fibrillation, a disorder in which the heart beats irregularly and unusually fast. Those who attend any of the lectures also will be able to take advantage of free screenings, including a blood pressure check, electrocardiogram, pulse oximetry and a stroke risk assessment. Four AFib lectures and screenings will be 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Acorn Library, 15624 S. Central Ave., Oak Forest; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Orland Park Civic Center, 14750 Ravinia Ave., Orland Park; 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Oak Lawn Library, 9427 S. Total Lipid Profile Testing: Orland Township is hosting total lipid profile testing 8:30 to 11 a.m. Sept. 7 and Sept. 20 at Orland Township, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park. Residents can have total cholesterol levels read, as well as triglycerides, LDL and HDL cholesterol. A 9 to 12 hour fast is required. The price of the test is $25 with proof of residency. Flu Vaccination Clinic: St. John the Evangelist Parish’s health ministry will host its seventh annual flu vaccination clinic 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 9 in the church narthex, 10701 Olcott Ave., St. John, Ind. Quit Smoking: Palos Community Hospital is offering the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking, an eight week program for adults who are ready to quit smoking. The program will take place 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays Sept. 11 to Oct. 23 at Palos Community Hospital Primary Care Center, 15300 West Ave., Orland Park. An additional class will take place Oct. 4.
