Heart Attack Risk: Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women. Factors that put anyone at an increased risk for heart attack include diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, family history and advancing age. Symptoms can be subtle, so knowing your risk is important, according to an Ingalls Family Care Center spokesman. A battery of tests, which include a lipid profile, blood glucose level and measurements of body mass index and waist circumference, can be taken at one of Ingalls’ three community locations: 19550 Governors Highway, Flossmoor; 6701 W. 159th St., Tinley Park; 1600 Torrence Ave., Calumet City. An Ingalls nurse navigator will discuss your results and make a plan to minimize your future risks for heart disease. Information: (800) 221-2199.

Diabetes Support Group: The Silver Cross Diabetes Center offers a free support group for people coping with diabetes meets at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Silver Cross Diabetes Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Registration: (815) 300-7781.

Blood Pressure Check: Silver Cross Hospital will perform free walk-in blood pressure checks 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Will County Farm Bureau, 100 Manhattan Road, Joliet.

Atrial Fibrillation: A cardiac electrophysiologists from Advocate Christ Medical Center’s Heart and Vascular Institute will talk about atrial fibrillation, its risk factors, treatment options and how to prevent stroke at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Oak Lawn Library, 9427 S. Raymond Ave. People who attend also will be able to take advantage of free screenings, including a blood pressure check, electrocardiogram, pulse oximetry and a stroke risk assessment. Health Fair: The inaugural “Fit For Fall” health fair will be 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 at St. James Manor and Villas, 1251 E. Richton Road, Crete. Wellness Wednesday: Orland Township is hosting Wellness Wednesday 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 26 in the Orland Township Activity Center, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park. Residents can have their blood pressure and blood sugar checked. A basic cholesterol screening is offered for $5 and the test requires a 9 to 12 hour fast. Calcium Artery Scoring: Silver Cross Hospital offers a test using a high-speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is for men 45 and older and women 55 and older who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. Cost is $200. Cardiac Risk Assessment: In honor of national cholesterol awareness month, Silver Cross is giving a complimentary sample box of dark chocolates from Dan’s Homemade Candies with a $40 baseline cardiac risk assessment.
