Here is a look at health news in the Southland.

Heart Health: Franciscan St. James Health is celebrating its recent Chest Pain Center accreditation with a Heart Health Open House 6:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at its Heart and Vascular Institute, 3800 W. 203rd St., Olympia Fields. Headlining the event will be author, Joe Piscatella, who will talk about healthy lifestyles at 7:15 p.m. The author of 12 books, and frequent television guest, Piscatella will discuss the impact of chronic stress on dietary and exercise compliance. St. James staff cardiologists will present “Cardiovascular Care Guidelines”at 6:45 p.m. and “The Cardiologist Is In,” a question and answer session at 8:15 p.m. The evening also will include free screenings for diabetes, cholesterol, peripheral artery disease and carotid artery problems. Knee Replacement Seminar: An orthopedic surgeon will discuss the causes and treatment for knee pain, as well as the benefits of custom-fit knee replacement at a seminar at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center, 8125 W. 171st St., Tinley Park. Reservations: (800) 221-2199.

Bariatric Support Group: Silver Cross Hospital in partnership with BMI Surgery will host a free bariatric support group for people who have undergone weight loss surgery from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at Silver Cross Hospital, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Grief Support Group: A free grief support group will meet 4:30 to 6 p.m. each Thursday from Oct. 25 to Nov. 29 at Heartland Hospice, 20646 Abbey Woods Court, Frankfort. Registration: (815) 469-7100.

Eye Screening: The Hickory Hills Lions Club is sponsoring a free eye screening for diabetic retinopathy from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 27 at Hickory Hills City Hall, 8652 W. 95th St. Information: (708) 430-2210.

Violence Prevention Forums: Southland Health Care Forum in partnership with Southland Hispanic Leadership Council will host a men-only forum on violence prevention at noon Oct. 28 at South Suburban Mission Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 13732 Spaulding Ave., Robbins.

Disease Prevention: Franciscan St. James registered dietitian Tina Musselman will discuss how lifestyle changes can impact cancer and heart disease prevention and treatment at a free seminar at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Franciscan St. James Olympia Fields campus, 20201 S. Mammograms: In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health is offering $100 mammograms including the radiologist fee for patients who call by Oct. 31 to schedule an appointment before Nov. 31. Influenza Vaccine: The Palos Township Health Service gives immunizations during clinic hours 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Friday, 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 2 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the facility, 10802 S. Roberts Road, Palos Hills. Appointments: (708) 598-2441.

Blood Pressure: Silver Cross Hospital offers free blood pressure checks 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily at Silver Cross Health Center, 12701 W. 143rd St., Homer Glen. Information: (708) 364-6337.
