Girls Night Out: Franciscan St. James Health will host its second annual Spirit of Women Girls’ Night Out at 6 p.m. Dec. 6 at the hospital’s Olympia Fields campus, 20201 S. Crawford Ave. Jan Dravecky, author of “A Joy I’d Never Known,” will be the featured speaker. She is the wife of former San Francisco Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky, who is known to baseball fans for his dramatic 1989 Major League comeback following cancer surgery on his pitching arm and his departure from the game after the cancer returned and resulted in the amputation of that arm. The couple established Dave Dravecky’s Outreach of Hope, a non-profit organization that provides hope to people whose lives have been devastated by cancer or amputation. The evening also will include free health screenings, refreshments, giveaways and raffles. Discounted Spa Services: To encourage women to be screened for breast cancer and osteoporosis, beginning this week, the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health, 1870 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox, is offering $10 off a one-hour massage or facial following a mammogram, breast ultrasound or bone densitometry scan. Spa services are performed by a licensed massage therapist or esthetician. Regularly priced at $60, one-hour massages and facials are payable by cash or check at time of appointment. The services are only available in conjunction with a screening or diagnostic test at the Silver Cross Center for Women’s Health. Appointments: (815) 300-7076.
CPR Class: Silver Cross Hospital, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox, is offering a cardiopulmonary resuscitation class for licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and certified nursing assistants. The class teaches one- and two-person, infant, child and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation as well as rescue from choking. The class will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 24. Cholesterol Screenings: Palos Township Health Service is offering a cholesterol screening 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at Palos Township, 10802 S. Roberts Road, Palos Hills. The total cholesterol is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents. Fasting is preferred. The cholestech test tells the total value, the high density, the low density, the triglyceride value and the ratios as well as glucose values. Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the test. A fee of $35 is charged for residents and $45 for non-residents. A hemoglobin A1c test also can be performed for diabetics which reflects average blood sugar levels over the previous three months. No fasting is required for this test. The fee is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents. All fee must be paid in cash. Appointments: (708) 598-2441.
