Now Open: Silver Cross Hospital’s resale shop — the Encore Shop — hosted its spring opening last weekend. The Encore Shop is located at the former Silver Cross Hospital campus in the Hershman Building, 1301 Copperfield Ave., Joliet. The newly expanded store is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items available for purchase include seasonal decorations, adult and children’s seasonal clothing, toys, household goods, books and other merchandise. For more than 50 years the Encore Shop has been operated by a volunteer group of women called the Silver Cross Advisory Board. In the past 11 years, the advisory board has donated more than $935,000 to Silver Cross for the purchase of a variety of medical equipment. The group recently completed a $75,000 pledge to purchase the water feature in the Dralle Serenity Garden outside the new Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. Prepared Childbirth One-Day Class: Silver Cross Hospital will offer a one-day prepared childbirth class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 23 at Silver Cross Hospital, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox. Participants will receive instruction from a registered nurse on breathing, relaxation and floor exercise techniques. The $40 screening includes measurements of total cholesterol including HDL and LDL levels, blood glucose level, triglyceride level, blood pressure and body fat; 12-lead EKG, health and lifestyle evaluation and a personal phone consultation with a registered cardiac nurse to review results. Calcium Artery Scoring: Silver Cross Hospital offers a test using a high-speed CT scanner that can measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to determine risk of having a heart attack. Calcium artery scoring is for men 45 and older and women 55 and older who smoke, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. Cost is $200. Specialized Conditioning Program: The physical therapy department of Advocate Christ Medical Center, 4440 W. 95th St., Oak Lawn, offers an ongoing program designed to promote physical fitness for people who have experienced a spinal cord injury or disability. Therapists create an independent wheelchair-level exercise program using a wheelchair-accessible weight station. Orland Wellness Program: Orland Township residents in need of medical services may purchase a discount Wellness Program voucher at Orland Township, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park, during office hours Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The program offers services at a discount of up to 50 percent. The services include adult and children’s physicals, podiatry screenings, dental examinations and cleanings, nutrition consultations, vision examinations and chiropractic examinations.
