CommUnity Garden: United By Faith Lutheran Church, 3240 W. 98th St., Evergreen Park, is accepting applications from community groups and residents to lease garden beds for the upcoming growing season. Last year, every bed was rented and hundreds of pounds of produce was grown in the raised boxes, which were built in accordance with American with Disabilities Act guidelines. The garden promotes the use of collected rainwater and repurposed materials. University of Illinois certified master gardener and master composter Kate Bradley will offer workshops and answer questions. Fee is $50 per bed plus a $10 refundable deposit. Care Conference: The Church Connection Initiative at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. College Drive, Palos Heights, will host the Care and Kindness Conference, at 6:30 p.m. April 26 and 8:15 a.m. April 27. Keynote speaker, the Rev. James R. Kok, pastor at Care Ministries from the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., will present “What Are We Here For? Family First.” Lectures will cover a range of topics including how to care for aging parents, supporting endangered children, how to work toward financial freedom and sharing personal resources. Hymn Festival: As part of its 150th anniversary celebration, First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Blue Island will present a hymn festival called “A Celebration of the Easter Season” at 4 p.m. April 28. Participating musicians include Chris Dederer, guest organist; Sally DuBois, assistant organist; Ellen Devine, choir director; the Midwest Motet Society and the church’s festival choir. Hunger Walk: The South Suburban Crop Hunger Walk will be April 28 starting at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 18850 Riegel Road, Homewood, with rest stops at Salem Lutheran Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. Paul Community Church and Millennium Park, all in Homewood. A quarter of the funds raised go to local hunger-fighting agencies including Respond Now, Jones Community Center, Rich Township Food Pantry and South Suburban PADS and the rest goes to Church World Service, a world relief agency. “Room For Eddie:” The Worthwhile Players will present their Spring Murder Mystery Dinner Play “Room for Eddie” May 3 and 4.
