School Supplies: The South Suburban Family Shelter is seeking Back to School Angels to donate a child’s school supply list or clothing or shoe needs. The shelter is accepting gift cards from office supply stores and retailers where school supplies can be purchased. Donors also can send a check payable to South Suburban Family Shelter to P.O. Karaoke for a Cause: South Suburban Family Shelter will host its inaugural Karaoke Night at 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at Lassen’s Sports Bar and Grill, 2131 W. 183rd St., Homewood. Proceeds will be used for the shelter’s education program in area schools focusing on family violence, healthy relationships and teen dating violence. Worth Township collects School : Worth Township’s Apple Tree program is collecting school supplies for township families experiencing financial difficulties. Funding Scholarships: A fundraiser to support scholarships for Lockport Township High School students is slated for 4 p.m. Aug. 9 at Pelican Harry’s, 14807 Founders Crossing, Homer Glen. The Kevin Killmer and Michelle Killmer Ivanich Memorial Scholarships were established to honor their memory by their father, Larry Killmer. Both Kevin and Michelle were Lockport graduates and both died of cancer, as did Killmer’s wife. The event will feature an appearance by White Sox Billy Pierce. Admission is $30 and includes a pasta dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. and two drinks.
Fight Hunger: The New Lenox Public Library, 120 Veterans Parkway, will collect food in exchange for fines to help the New Lenox Township Food Pantry stock its shelves. The program runs through Aug. 10 at the library. Patrons may bring in a nonperishable food item to have up to $15 in fines waived. Food items cannot be used to pay for lost or damaged materials.
Cruising for a Cause: The Teamster Horsemen Motorcycle Association will sponsor its seventh annual Charity Run in support of the Humane Society Calumet Area on Aug. 10. Sign-up begins at 9:30 a.m. at The Glass Tap, 3329 Chicago Road, Steger. Tickets are $15 per person and include a meal. The last bike will leave at 11 a.m. and last bike will be in at 5 p.m. There will be music, a raffle, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Dress for Success: Orland Township Youth and Family Services will have a Dress for Success clothing drive 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at the township office, 14807 Ravinia Ave., Orland Park. The Sixth District Circuit Court Dress for Success Program collects gently used dress clothing such as dress shirts, ties, polos, khaki pants and jackets for young men who are attending court in an effort to develop healthy self-esteem regarding the way they will begin to see themselves and to instill respect for the court. Golf for a Cause: The Crisis Center for South Suburbia will host the annual Dianne Masters Cup golf outing Aug. 13 at Silver Lake Country Club, 14700 S. 82nd Ave., Orland Park. Former Blackhawks goalie Murray Bannerman and WGN’s Andrea Darlas will be on hand for meet-and-greets. The cost of $150 per person includes golf, continental breakfast before the 9 a.m. shotgun start, lunch, cocktails, dinner, raffle prizes and contests. Golf for Hospice Care: Joliet Area Community Hospice will host its annual golf outing Aug. 13 at Joliet Country Club, 1009 Spencer Road, Joliet. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start is slated for 9:30 a.m. It will be a 3 in 1 scramble to include men’s, women’s and mixed couples. The costs are $135 per golfer, $540 per foursome, or $45 for dinner only. The price includes green fees, a cart, lunch, course cocktails and soft drinks, dinner and cocktails. Help Lincoln-Way Bands: The Lincoln-Way High School Music Boosters will host the 28th annual SIAM discount book sale noon to 5 p.m. on the third and fourth weekends in August. Volunteers will be in Lincoln-Way-area neighborhoods selling the books, which will offer discounts from local businesses valid Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2014. The books are $15. Golf for a Cause: The Meehan Golf Classic to benefit the family of the late Mike Meehan is scheduled for Aug. 19 at Idlewild Country Club, 19201 Dixie Highway, Flossmoor. Check-in will be at 10 a.m., followed by lunch at 11, a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., and a cocktail reception, dinner and awards starting at 5:30 p.m. Meehan, of Frankfort, died in May after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. School District 122 Fundraiser: “Celebrating Stars of Tomorrow,” the primary fundraiser for the New Lenox School District 122 Foundation’s teacher grant program, is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 7 at Harry E. Anderson VFW Post 9545, 323 Old Hickory Road, New Lenox. Tickets are for sale at the District 122 Administration Office, 102 S. Cedar Road, or at Lincolnway Body Shop, 22002 Howell Drive, New Lenox. Homeless Veterans: Benjamin O. Davis VFW Post 311, 22341 Governors Highway, Richton Park, will host Stand Down 2013, an outreach program for veterans, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 7. There will be free health screenings, haircuts, clothing and meals. Social service agencies and veteran coordinators will be on hand to provide information. Cook County Commissioner Joan Patricia Murphy is collecting toiletries and sundry items for the event. Donation deadline is Sept. 4 at Murphy’s district office, 5405 W. 127th St., Crestwood.
